Plug-in solar panels in Leeds

Three things change depending on where you live: who you notify, how much the panel actually makes, and who has to say yes first. Here are all three for Leeds.

Step one, and it is a legal requirement

In Leeds you notify Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid · Yorkshire licence area

Your network operator is fixed by your postcode. You cannot choose it and switching electricity supplier does not change it. Great Britain is divided into fourteen licence areas, and Leeds falls in the Yorkshire licence area.

Northern Powergrid runs two licence areas. Leeds is in Yorkshire, not the Northeast area that covers Tyneside.

G98 notification is not optional and it is not the same thing as telling your supplier. It is a short form, it is free, and the QR code on your kit links straight to the right one. Do it before you connect, not after.

Modelled output

What 800W realistically makes in Yorkshire

These are irradiance model figures for 800W of panel, not measurements from a roof down the road. Treat them as a ceiling you will fall short of rather than a target.

OPTIMAL TILT

740 kWh

Per year, south facing, angled properly on a garden frame or flat roof with nothing shading it.

VERTICAL RAIL

460 kWh

Per year, mounted flat against a south-facing balcony railing. The convenience costs you output.

WHAT YOU KEEP

25–60%

The share you use as it is generated. The rest goes to the grid for nothing. Being home in the day is worth more than a bigger kit.

Leeds sits in a valley and the difference between a south-facing balcony in Headingley and a north-facing one in the same building is larger than the map suggests. Orientation is worth more here than kit size.

The one most people buy

Two panels on one 800VA inverter. The sweet spot for a typical home's background load, and the largest output the rules allow.

Local reality

Housing stock in Leeds

Leeds has the back-to-back terrace stock that exists almost nowhere else in England, concentrated in Harehills, Beeston and Holbeck. Many have no private outdoor space at all, which rules out a panel entirely. Check what you actually own before you spend anything.

The riverside and Holbeck Urban Village apartment blocks are the balcony market, and several are in the Leeds Waterfront conservation area. Freeholder consent is the practical hurdle rather than planning.

Permission questions locally go to Leeds City Council, though for a freestanding panel in a private rear garden you are usually dealing with a lease or a landlord rather than a planning officer.

Leeds questions

Straight answers

Which DNO do I notify in Leeds?

Northern Powergrid, in its Yorkshire licence area. G98 notification is mandatory before you connect a plug-in solar kit, and it goes to your network operator, not your electricity supplier.

How much electricity will a plug-in solar kit make in Leeds?

An 800W array in Leeds models at roughly 740 kWh a year at optimal tilt, or around 460 kWh flat against a vertical balcony rail. You only save money on the share you use as it is generated.

I live in a back-to-back with no garden. What are my options?

Realistically none for a plug-in kit. The specification needs the panel mounted safely on space you control, and a shared street frontage does not qualify. This is the one common Leeds housing type where the honest answer is that this product is not for you.
